Malted Milk Chocolate Brownies with Salted Dulce de Leche Topping and Crushed Whoppers

Malted Milk Chocolate Brownies with Salted Dulce de Leche Topping and Crushed Whoppers

It's amazing to me which memories from our childhood we hold onto. I have a random collection of memories from my family's Easter celebrations. One in particular I don't think I'll ever forget. Let's call it the mystery of the golden egg.

I was a swimmer growing up and my family belonged to a big swim club in Philadelphia. Every year they held an Easter egg hunt for the kids. While the details are a little blurry, I believe there were awards for the child who collected the most eggs and for the child who found the golden egg. The golden egg was just what it sounds like, a gold painted egg. Presumably, it was hidden in a more difficult to find spot than the other eggs.

One year, I did it. I found the golden egg. I have such a vivid memory of seeing it and being overwhelmed with excitement as I bent down and placed it in my Easter basket. Knowing I had such precious cargo in my basket, I immediately ran to my parents. I reached down in my basket to show them my victory and....no golden egg. Blue, purple, pink, yellow. Every pastel color you could think of, but no golden egg. Shortly after, someone else screamed with excitement as he claimed the reward for finding the golden egg.

So what happened? Well, there are many theories...actually no, that's not true. There are really only two. I was either delusional or I dropped it. Either way, I will never forget the high of thinking I found the golden egg and the ultimate disappointment upon realization there was no golden egg in my basket.

But enough about my Easter memories. Let's talk about these brownies. I don't actually know if Whoppers are considered an Easter candy, but my family only ever ate them from our Easter baskets so they are an Easter candy to me. These brownies are extra fudgey and chewy with an old fashioned malted flavor from the addition of malted milk powder. Creamy dulce de leche sits on top with loads of crushed Whoppers. These are also super easy to put together. I thought I would run into trouble finding malted milk powder, but my regular grocery store carries the Carnation brand in the same area as the sweetened condensed milks. Dulce de leche will be in the same section or the international section.

Malted Milk Chocolate Brownies with Salted Dulce de Leche Topping and Crushed Whoppers
Makes an 8x8 pan

Ingredients
4 oz semi-sweet chocolate, roughly chopped
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into tablespoon cubes
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup malted milk powder
1/2 cup milk chocolate chips
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1 tsp vanilla extract
3/4 tsp salt, divided
14 ounce can dulce de leche
5 ounces Whoppers, chopped

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees and line a 8x8 pan with foil and spray well with non-stick cooking spray. Melt the butter and chocolate in a saucepan over very low heat, stirring constantly. When the mixture is smooth and melted, remove from the heat and immediately pour into a large bowl. Let the mixture cool to room temperature. Once cool, add the sugar, flour, malted milk, 1/4 tsp salt, vanilla extract, and eggs. Stir until combined. Add the chocolate chips and stir until combined. Spread into a prepared pan and bake for 45min.

When the brownies are mostly cool, prepare your topping. Add the dulce de leche to a microwavable bowl and heat for 5 - 10 seconds. Stir in 1/4 tsp salt, taste and add the other 1/4 teaspoon if desired. Spread the dulce de leche over the brownies and sprinkle the whoppers on top.
